What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a highly skilled technique performed by a licensed individual using a sterile, single-use filiform needle. This needle, also known as a dry needle, is specifically designed to alleviate pain and dysfunction caused by various musculoskeletal issues. It is important to note that dry needling should not be confused with traditional acupuncture. The licensed professional will carefully insert the sterile filiform needle into the skin, targeting specific myofascial trigger points. By employing repeated strokes or movements of the needle, without completely withdrawing it, the trigger point is effectively deactivated. This method of treatment not only controls and reduces pain but also improves range of motion, mobility, muscle strength, and overall functional ability in the treated areas.

What to Expect

  • During the session, it is possible to experience muscle soreness and/or twitches. These sensations are completely normal and should be anticipated. It is also possible to feel no discomfort at all.
  • To help alleviate any soreness that may occur after the treatment, you can use a hot pack or take a relaxing hot bath or soak in a hot tub. Staying hydrated is also important in order to minimize any potential soreness.
  • After the treatment, you may initially experience an increase in pain for one to two days, but this should be followed by an expected improvement in your overall symptoms.
  • As your body works towards healing the tissue dysfunction, you might feel a general sense of fatigue. This is a natural response as your body requires energy to assist in the healing process.
  • It is possible to have a small bruise or localized bleeding in the area where the needle was inserted. However, please note that bruising is a common occurrence and should not cause any concern.
  • During the treatment, you may also experience other sensations such as relaxation, an increase in energy levels, dizziness, nausea, sweating, or irritation at the site of needle insertion.

Risks of the Procedure

The primary concern with DN is the accidental puncture of a lung, known as pneumothorax. In the event of such an occurrence, a chest x-ray may be necessary, but no further treatment should be required. Individuals may experience shortness of breath for a few days to several weeks. Although rare, a more severe lung puncture may require hospitalization.

Additional risks include nerve injury or infection at the insertion site. However, the risk of infection is minimized by using sterile needles that are disposed of after each treatment. The monofilament needles used in DN are small and lack a cutting edge, making significant tissue trauma highly unlikely.

Preventing these risks involves maintaining open communication with the practitioner, carefully following pre-session instructions, and adhering to aftercare guidelines.
